Road to Glory Positions Overview

Road to Glory (RTG) is the career mode in EA Sports College Football 27 where you create a player, earn a scholarship, and live the college football experience from the field. Choosing the right position shapes your entire journey — from the skills you develop to the Heisman moments you create.

CFB 27 expands the playable position roster with three exciting new additions: Tight End, Edge Rusher, and Free Safety. This guide covers every available position and what makes each one unique.

Offensive Positions

Quarterback (QB)

The most impactful position in Road to Glory. As a QB, you control the offense every snap:

  • Passing focus — Develop accuracy, throw power, and read recognition
  • Running ability — Dual-threat QBs add a rushing dimension
  • Leadership — QBs have the most influence on team morale and culture
  • Heisman potential — Quarterbacks have the clearest path to the Heisman Trophy

Best for — Players who want full control of every offensive play and the spotlight that comes with the position.

Running Back (HB)

Break tackles, find running lanes, and pile up yards on the ground:

  • Ball carrier vision — Read blocks and find the hole
  • Elusiveness — Make defenders miss in the open field
  • Receiving — Modern RBs need to catch passes out of the backfield
  • Goal-line carries — Vulture touchdowns boost your stats

Best for — Players who love physical, momentum-building runs and highlight-reel broken tackles.

Wide Receiver (WR)

Run crisp routes, make spectacular catches, and stretch the field:

  • Route running — Create separation with precise breaks
  • Catch ability — Make contested and diving catches
  • Speed — Burn defenders deep on vertical routes
  • YAC — Turn short catches into big gains

Best for — Players who want big-play excitement and one-on-one matchups.

Tight End (TE) — NEW in CFB 27

The newest offensive position in RTG, Tight Ends are versatile weapons:

  • Blocking — Inline blocking in the run game
  • Route running — Exploiting mismatches against linebackers
  • Red zone target — Big body makes you a favorite in scoring territory
  • YAC ability — Stiff-arm defensive backs after the catch

Best for — Players who want a balanced role combining physical blocking with receiving playmaking. Tight Ends have unique storyline moments around their dual-role nature.

Offensive Line (OL) — Not Player-Controlled

Offensive line positions (LT, LG, C, RG, RT) are not player-controlled in Road to Glory. They are simulated based on ratings and scheme fit. However, as a skill player, your offensive line's quality directly affects your experience.

Defensive Positions

Edge Rusher (OLB/DE) — NEW in CFB 27

Get after the quarterback from the edge of the defense:

  • Pass rush moves — Develop swim, rip, spin, and bull-rush techniques
  • Run defense — Set the edge and contain outside runs
  • Coverage drops — Occasionally drop into zone coverage on zone blitzes
  • Sack celebrations — The most satisfying defensive play in football

Best for — Players who want to wreak havoc in the backfield and feel the rush of getting to the quarterback.

Linebacker (MLB)

The quarterback of the defense, reading plays and making stops:

  • Run stuffing — Fill gaps and bring down ball carriers
  • Zone coverage — Drop into passing lanes and break up throws
  • Blitz — Time your rush to get home unblocked
  • Tackling — Sure tackling is the foundation of MLB play

Best for — Players who like reading the offense and being involved in every defensive play.

Cornerback (CB)

Lock down the opponent's best receiver and create turnovers:

  • Man coverage — Mirror routes step-for-step
  • Zone coverage — Read the QB and break on the ball
  • Ball skills — Interceptions and pass breakups
  • Return ability — Pick-sixes change games

Best for — Players who thrive in one-on-one isolation and love making game-changing plays.

Free Safety (FS) — NEW in CFB 27

The center fielder of the defense, roaming the deep middle:

  • Range — Cover ground sideline to sideline
  • Ball hawk — Read the QB and jump routes for interceptions
  • Tackling — The last line of defense can't miss
  • Play recognition — Identify run vs. pass quickly

Best for — Players who want to be the eraser on defense, reading the quarterback and making plays on the ball.

Strong Safety (SS)

The hybrid defender, equally comfortable in the box or deep:

  • Run support — Come up and fill against the run
  • Coverage — Cover tight ends and running backs
  • Blitz — Time safety blitzes for sacks
  • Physicality — The enforcer of the secondary

Best for — Players who want versatility and physicality on defense.

Choosing Your Position

Consider Your Playstyle

  • Control freak — Quarterback gives you the ball every play
  • Physical player — Running back, linebacker, or edge rusher
  • Skill player — Wide receiver or cornerback for one-on-one battles
  • Versatile — Tight end, strong safety, or free safety for varied responsibilities

Heisman Potential

Some positions have a clearer path to the Heisman Trophy:

  • Quarterback — Most Heisman winners are QBs; stats are easily visible
  • Running back — Strong candidates with volume rushing stats
  • Wide receiver — Rare but possible with dominant receiving numbers
  • Defensive players — Extremely rare; need historic stat lines

Difficulty by Position

  • Easiest — QB, HB (you get the ball frequently)
  • Moderate — WR, CB (involved often but dependent on the play call)
  • Challenging — TE, Edge Rusher, FS, SS, MLB (fewer direct opportunities per game)

Tips for All Positions

  • Attend every practice — Reps improve your skills faster than anything
  • Choose your school wisely — Playing time matters more than prestige for development
  • Study film — Understanding your opponent's tendencies gives you an edge
  • Stay healthy — Injuries can derail your season; manage your body between games
  • Be patient — Some positions take longer to get opportunities; capitalize when they come
